New Sustainability Report: Proactivity as the Key to Transformation

Guided by the principle “Proactivity is everything”, ALPLA is proud to present its sixth Sustainability Report, highlighting achievements, progress and challenges over the past two financial years. For the first time, the report has been aligned with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) – a significant step towards greater transparency and comparability.

Proactivity is everything

The new Sustainability Report reflects ALPLA’s holistic approach to addressing environmental, social and economic responsibilities across the entire value chain. It places a strong focus on climate action, circular economy, and responsible business conduct – while emphasising the importance of collaboration with partners, customers and suppliers around the world.

The report outlines key areas of impact that are critical to the company’s sustainable transformation – from decarbonising operations to boosting resource efficiency and increasing organisational resilience and transparency.

ALPLA CEO Philipp Lehner

'Proactivity is everything' – this guiding principle not only reflects our mindset at ALPLA but also shapes our daily actions. This report demonstrates the impact of our forward-thinking and determined approach to show what we’ve already achieved, and what still lies ahead.

Key milestones of 2023–2024

  • Climate targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
Our ambitious emissions reduction targets have received official validation – marking a significant step forward in our climate strategy.
  • EcoVadis Gold rating once again achieved
This recognition confirms ALPLA’s sustainability maturity and continued commitment to responsible business practices, putting us in the top 5% of all companies assessed.
  • Global expansion of recycling capacity
We are investing in closed-loop solutions and advancing the circular economy by implementing the 4Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Replace. We continuously increase our installed and projected mechanical recycling output capacity, at 350,000 tonnes by the end of 2024.
  • Substantial increase in the usage of renewable electricity
Large-scale transitions to electricity from renewable sources in Germany, the UK,  Spain, Portugal and Turkey enabled a significant increase in renewable electricity usage between 2023 and 2024, now at 38.3%, in turn decreasing the associated Scope 2 GHG emissions.
  • Steady increase in the share of post-consumer recycled (PCR) raw materials
We are closing in on our 2025 target to reach a 25% share in the usage of PCR raw materials, with 21.9% achieved in 2024. This supports heavily our Scope 3 GHG emissions reduction commitment.
  • Increased workforce and training provided
We saw a year-on-year 4% increase in ALPLA’s internal employees. Our commitment to empowering each one of them translated into a 5.6% increase in the average number of training hours, while the total number of training hours increased by 9.9% between 2023 and 2024.
  • First-time alignment with European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS)
Three years ahead of the legal requirement, ALPLA adopts the ESRS framework, placing a strong emphasis on double materiality, value chain integration, and climate-related risk management.

Climate action, circularity and responsible conduct

As part of a double materiality assessment, ALPLA identified key topics that are material from both an impact and financial perspective – including climate change, microplastics, water stress, resource efficiency, employee engagement, and business ethics.
Operating in 46 countries and employing more than 24,000 people worldwide, ALPLA remains a trusted partner for innovative and sustainable packaging solutions. The company’s forward-looking mindset is also reflected in initiatives such as “Plastic Is Fantastic”, which promote fact-based dialogue and knowledge-sharing around the role of plastics. “We believe in fostering fact-based communication about the role of plastics and contributing to a constructive, solution-oriented dialogue”, Philipp Lehner said.

Shaping sustainability together – with employees and partners worldwide

The report makes it clear: sustainability is a joint effort. The progress achieved in recent years would not have been possible without the close cooperation of employees and business partners. At the same time, ALPLA views sustainability as an ongoing journey – one that prioritizes decarbonization, material efficiency and resilience.
