People at ALPLA - Interview with Omesh Thilmun
In our "People at ALPLA" series, we are excited to introduce Omesh Thilmun, a very experienced professional in the plastics industry. With years of experience, Omesh has played a key role in South Africa. Join us as we explore Omesh's journey, achievements, and experiences at ALPLA and within the packaging industry.

Omesh Thilmun, Head of Sales Non-Food, Subsaharan Africa
Hi Omesh, thanks for taking the time to talk about your impressive career in the plastics industry and at ALPLA. Maybe you can give us an overview of it?
I began my career in 1984 in mainframe computer operations. Over time, I transitioned into roles in Quality, Operations, Supply Chain, and Sales within the plastics industry.
In my current role at ALPLA, I have been appointed Head of Sales (Non-Food). My journey here has involved being part of the team integrating five plants into the new Lanseria site, a process with significant challenges such as relocating machinery and coping with a month-long power outage. Despite these hurdles, the plant successfully opened, impressing customers with ALPLA’s expansion during a period when many businesses were struggling.
Additionally, we acquired an existing company to expand into the lubricants market serving both the lubricating oil and personal care markets.
You are approaching retirement. What aspects of working at ALPLA will you miss most?
Leading my dynamic team has been a significant achievement. The support from Production, Finance, and Supply Chain departments was invaluable. Making quick business decisions with local and regional teams proved effective, and the global support in technology and innovations was phenomenal. I enjoyed learning and staying updated on global advancements, especially within ALPLA.
Our design team’s work deserves commendation, as presenting to customers showcases our competitive edge. Earning respect from competitors while representing ALPLA has been immensely gratifying. Additionally, mentoring young professionals in our ‘Future Corner’ has been rewarding.
What have been your biggest achievements in your career at ALPLA?
Aligning the sales team to the new culture that ALPLA introduced and ensuring adherence to the ‘ALPLA WAY’ on a regular basis.
Apart from that: new business opportunities have been pursued, with several projects executed. Notably, Unilever SA saw the introduction of the first multilayer personal care bottle in South Africa, which incorporates PCR in the middle layer while maintaining colour consistency on the outer layer. This bottle won the IPSA Gold Pack Award in South Africa in 2020.
In addition to this award, efforts have been made to promote circular economy practices, sustainability and recycling. Various awards have been received for these initiatives.
Furthermore, a 100 ml jar in virgin PET is about to be launched, with the goal of transitioning to 100% rPET in the future. The project required three new moulds and two new machines, which are now installed and ready for production.
What advice would you give to a new employee?
In the packaging industry, especially in South Africa, ALPLA is a leading company and is respected by its competitors. While we may not always be able to meet every customer’s needs, due to factors beyond our control, ALPLA is often the first choice for many customers. So, congratulations, you made a great career choice.
For new employees, working in plastics can be challenging due to the complexity of different polymers and technologies. However, those who are dedicated and committed can find a clear path for growth. At ALPLA, we focus on empowering staff, helping them to realise their potential, and providing opportunities for advancement. There are numerous global opportunities within the company, and the pursuit of excellence is ongoing. From a business investment perspective, ALPLA is advanced in technology and innovation, positioning itself as a leader in the industry.

We would also like to take the chance to get to know you a little bit better. So let’s start with some more private questions. How do you plan to spend your time when you retire?
Now I am dedicated to family life with my wife, three children, and four grandchildren. I plan to write a book about my personal journey and my 46-year career in the packaging industry.
Travel is a priority, both locally within South Africa and internationally. I have taken up cycling at weekends and enjoy hiking trails across South Africa with my family.
Born in Durban, I am grateful to the community that shaped me. Reflecting on my fortunate journey, I would like to give something back and make a small difference in my community.
What is your favourite place on earth?
Cape Town, South Africa – particularly during the summer.
And what is the one thing you just cannot resist?
Occasionally enjoying a classy glass of red wine. And watching the sunset over the ocean and mountains in Cape Town, where my daughter lives.
Back to ALPLA and your work here. What do you find most interesting about working at ALPLA?
Running 200 plants worldwide needs a solid plan, which the Lehner family has nailed. Constant investments show ALPLA’s commitment to growing the business. ALPLA’s values and strategy are clearly shared, keeping everyone on the same page.
Among the public, plastics often get criticised. You have worked your whole life in this industry. What do you tell people, when confronted with critics on our main raw material?
The primary challenge in South Africa is the slow advancement in education and collaboration regarding plastics. Government support for Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs) and the plastics industry is inadequate, with limited media coverage on sustainability, recycling and the circular economy. As a result, many individuals are unaware of proper packaging disposal methods and often dispose of it incorrectly.
There is also a widespread lack of understanding about the recycling chain and the fact that rPET in South Africa is 100% food-grade approved. Efforts by PROs to raise awareness about avoiding beverages in metal cans or glass bottles have not been sufficiently effective. Customers frequently seek guidance on recyclable materials.
I use different platforms to teach people about recycling and how it helps the environment by cutting down on plastic waste and CO2 emissions. I’m also planning to team up with the SA Plastics Federation to boost these educational efforts. People often overlook the benefits of medical-grade plastics, like their uses in healthcare and automotive parts, and how they help reduce food waste, focusing instead mostly on drinks bottles.
Remember: ‘Plastic is Fantastic’ as our CEO Philipp Lehner points out frequently!
Looking back, what did you miss in your career path?
I always wanted to work abroad for a year or two, but unfortunately that didn’t happen.
Please describe ALPLA in a few words.
Exceptional and excellent leadership with a clear vision for the future that will distinguish ALPLA from its peers.
Looking back – what is your legacy in the packaging industry and at ALPLA?
I have led the development of innovative products and services within the packaging industry and at ALPLA. I have cultivated a strong company culture that emphasises employee development and have prioritised customer satisfaction through exceptional service. Additionally, I have actively engaged with stakeholders and decision makers in the business. My contributions include mentoring future leaders, establishing a sustainable business model with a positive environmental impact, and actively engaging with the community to make a meaningful difference.
Anything else you would like to share?
The decisions and choices you make today will determine your future, not your circumstances now.
Thanks for your time and all the best for your retirement.
