Bio-based jar for vegan styling cream

ALPLA has developed a special packaging solution for the cosmetics brand La Biosthétique. The jar, closure and liner for the Velvet Finish Paste are made from 100 per cent bio-based material. The sustainable system is ready for series production and scalable.

The vegan Velvet Finish Paste from La Biosthétique nurtures natural beauty. The blend of white clay, ginseng extract, wax myrtle and carnauba wax leaves hair with a velvety, matte shine. Free from colourants, sulphates and silicones, the styling cream is predestined for packaging that is as natural as it is attractive. As a pioneering partner, ALPLA has created an environmentally friendly special format. The jar, cap and liner are made entirely from bio-based material.

This innovative solution proves how quickly and easily the right packaging can underline sustainable brand values and quality standards. It relies on renewable raw materials, making the promise of naturalness visible to all. Of course, all this would be worthless if the alternative packaging failed in practice or was not accepted by consumers. The limited edition of Velvet Finish Paste has dispelled both concerns.

Quality is rewarded

The bio-based complete system consisting of a jar and lid appeals to all the senses and scores highly in terms of its carbon footprint. It looks good, feels good and fits comfortably in the hand. The cream is safely stored and stays fresh for a long time. The choice of materials is reflected in the ecological footprint: the packaging made from renewable raw materials consumes only half as many emissions as a comparable solution made from conventional new plastic.

What do people in the target group of hairdressers and salon owners think about the packaging? They attach great importance to environmentally and climate-friendly packaging, are convinced by the solution presented and, for the most part, are even willing to pay a little more for it. This was the result of a survey conducted by La Biosthétique among 70 professional users of the special edition.

Perfect match: content and packaging

With the Velvet Finish Paste from La Biosthétique, the contents and packaging harmonise in two ways. This is because the contents also determine how suitable bio-based plastic is for the product. "The lower the water content, the higher the potential. Styling cream is perfect for this – as are numerous other cosmetic products. We carry out tests in advance to determine what is technically feasible and then develop tailor-made solutions. In the premium segment in particular, packaging must also be aesthetically appealing. We achieve this through a diverse range of materials," explains Nadine Wild, Product Development Manager at ALPLA. La Biosthétique opted for a material containing a filler made from wood flour derived from industrial by-products.

Whether high-gloss or wood-effect: ALPLA offers a range of colours and options. Materials developed in-house and suitable for modification by the ALPLA Group are also available. Regardless of the material, ALPLA already manufactures the bio-based standard jars and closures, including liners, in small series on existing production lines. "The technology is mature and can be quickly scaled up for small series of up to 40,000 units. Anyone who wants to break new ground on a large scale can shorten the path to market launch with us, " emphasises Nadine Wild. There are numerous options for liners: in addition to the bio-based version, conventional liners made of foam, aluminium and cardboard as well as peelable liners are also possible.

"We have been pioneers in the field of sustainability since the 1980s. With the new plant-based jar for our Velvet Finish Paste, we have teamed up with ALPLA to launch a fully bio-based material – and the initial feedback from our customers about the product has been overwhelmingly positive."
