People at ALPLA - Interview with Pascal Techt
From a fascination with chemistry to high-tech training: Pascal Techt (18) talks about his apprenticeship as a plastics technologist at ALPLA. This interview was partly conducted by the information portal "Lehre in Vorarlberg" and has been supplemented with additional questions.

Pascal Techt is doing an apprenticeship as a plastics technologist at ALPLA.
What are your tasks as a plastics technologist?
We manufacture a wide range of plastic products. My duties include setting up our production machines, checking the tools and surface quality, creating, adjusting and optimising work processes, and finally carrying out quality inspections.
How would you explain your job to a child?
I work on a big machine with a “cube”, which we call a mould. Inside this mould is a form or template used to produce different plastic products. There’s also an injection unit – a bit like a water pistol, but it’s filled with liquid plastic, thick like honey. When you press the trigger, the plastic is injected into the mould, where it hardens, and the finished item – such as a bottle or cup – comes out.
How did you discover this profession?
I received a brochure at school listing all the apprenticeship options. Since I’ve always been interested in chemistry, I thought plastics technology might be a good match for me.
How did you end up training at ALPLA?
That happened during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it wasn’t easy to arrange appointments. I’m grateful to my family for supporting me during my search. And perhaps there was a bit of luck involved – I was simply in the right place at the right time. I got the chance to do a two-day taster session at ALPLA and really enjoyed it. After that, I applied and was accepted.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?
I really like producing items that people use every day, such as shower gel bottles or drinks packaging. I also think it’s great to know that “my” products are used all around the world. In terms of tasks, I especially enjoy preparing and setting up the machines.
What’s the nicest compliment you’ve received so far?
I noticed a small detail in a tool and work process that my instructor had missed. I was praised for my keen eye and precise work.
For those interested in your profession: what are the most important qualities needed to become a plastics technologist?
Manual dexterity, an interest in chemistry, and a liking for working with large machinery.
Let’s get to know you a bit better: what are your hobbies?
I really enjoy driving cars and motorbikes. I also love working out at the gym.
You're now in the third year of a four-year apprenticeship. Looking ahead, where do you see yourself in five years?
After completing my apprenticeship, I’d like to do my A-levels while continuing to work. I’d like to stay on at ALPLA as a technician and build up more experience. I’d also love to take the opportunity to work abroad – ALPLA offers lots of options for that.
Thanks very much for the nice chat.
