People at ALPLA - Interview with Nick Wang

Hello Nick, can you tell us a little about your current role and what a typical day looks like for you?

As Operations Manager of the Tianjin plant, I am responsible for our financial and operational performance while also living our ALPLA Identity every day. 

My days are built around four main areas. First, I start the morning by reviewing our KPIs and using data to identify where we need to focus. For me, facts are the basis for good decisions and effective problem solving. Second, I work closely with different functions and follow up on projects to make sure things keep moving. I often act as a bridge between sales, project teams and operations, because we can only achieve our goals when the entire value chain works together. 

Third, I want to turn discussions into action. Whether we are in a meeting room or online, I try to create an environment where people feel comfortable sharing their ideas and opinions. Depending on the topic, this might mean a very data-driven operational review or a more open brainstorming and problem-solving session. I believe good teamwork is more important than hierarchy. And finally, I spend more than an hour every day on the shopfloor. Of course, I look at machines and products, but that is not the most important part. I want to talk to our people, listen to their concerns, coach them and help remove obstacles.

What do you find most interesting about working at ALPLA?

The first word that comes to mind is warmth. At ALPLA, people genuinely want to help each other. Whenever I contact colleagues – even colleagues in other countries – to discuss a challenge, a problem or an improvement opportunity, I usually receive very practical and thoughtful suggestions. That feeling of support makes ALPLA feel like a family to me. It is something I have experienced throughout my career here.

How would you describe the working environment?

I would describe it as people-oriented. You can see that clearly in our ALPLA Identity, but it is more than just words. I experience a culture of respect and motivation in my daily work. Communication goes in both directions, and people are encouraged to contribute their ideas and opinions.

You have been with ALPLA for 18 years and have worked in many different roles. What does that journey mean to you?

I am very grateful for the opportunities I have had at ALPLA. I started on the shopfloor as a packer, so I have experienced the company from many different perspectives. Every role taught me something new and gave me the opportunity to develop further. Looking back, I am proud that after 18 years I am still passionate about my work and motivated to contribute even more. For me, that is one of the most important achievements of my career.

What would you say is your biggest professional achievement so far?

My latest achievement is seeing how motivated the Tianjin team has become. Since I took over as Operations Manager in March 2026, we have worked hard on improving our performance while also strengthening our relationships with customers. This has contributed to very strong ROTA and cost/GP performance compared with previous years. But for me, the numbers are only one part of the story. What makes me particularly proud is seeing the team continuously improve and take ownership. That gives us the motivation to aim for even greater milestones.

What advice would you give to colleagues who are just starting their career at ALPLA?

Challenges and opportunities often come together. My advice is to face challenges with courage and always try to understand the root cause of a problem. If you stay focused on the real issue, there is usually a way forward. And be patient. Believe in yourself and in the value of the work you are doing. Good things take time, but the effort you put in will eventually bring results.

What do you like to do in your free time?

When I am at home, I enjoy playing billiards with my son. It requires a lot of concentration, and we both really enjoy the challenge. When we go out together, I like to let him choose where we go and what we explore. He has thousands of questions, so I spend a lot of time trying to answer them!

What is your favorite place in the world?

I love peace and quiet, so I am particularly drawn to peaceful places where people can simply enjoy their lives.

If you had a whole month off and could spend it anywhere in the world, where would you go – and what would you do there?

I would love to lose myself in Iceland for a while – the land of fire and ice, and one of the most peaceful and secluded places in the world. Away from work, everyday responsibilities and the roles I normally play in life, I could simply be myself for a while. I think the experience would change the way I see life and what really matters to me.

Is there something on your bucket list that you would really like to experience one day?

I've always dreamed of spending a day on the moon – seeing our Earth from afar and looking up at the stars. I think it would be an incredible experience and a chance to see our planet and life on Earth from a completely different perspective.
