ALPLAindustrial gives marine litter a new lease of life

Lost fishing nets are among the biggest sources of plastic pollution in the oceans. In collaboration with the Danish recycling company Plastix, ALPLAindustrial transforms this material into high-quality industrial packaging. The OceanIX bucket demonstrates how the circular economy can be put into practice in industry – without compromising on functionality or performance.

Marine litter as a valuable raw material

Lost or abandoned fishing nets and other marine equipment – so-called ‘ghost nets’ – are among the most harmful forms of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans. It is estimated that between 75 and 86 per cent of the floating plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch comes from lost or abandoned fishing gear. These long-lasting plastics often remain in the oceans for decades, endangering marine ecosystems and species.

To tackle this problem, the Danish recycling company Plastix processes disused fishing nets and marine equipment into high-quality recycled polypropylene (rPP). ALPLAindustrial uses the material in the OceanIX bucket, demonstrating how marine waste is transformed into high-performance industrial packaging.

Circular economy for industrial applications

The material can be used on request for any bucket from ALPLAindustrial’s standard portfolio and is suitable for paints, varnishes, coatings, and building and construction products. At the same time, it reduces the need for virgin material and supports closed material cycles.

According to an independently verified life cycle assessment (LCA), the recycled material used generates up to 94.3 per cent fewer CO₂ emissions than comparable polypropylene made from virgin raw materials. This enables companies to reduce their carbon footprint without compromising on the functionality and performance required for industrial applications. Furthermore, the solution supports the growing demand for traceable recycled materials and helps to meet increasing ESG and sustainability requirements.

Packaging as part of the solution

Together with Plastix, ALPLAindustrial demonstrates how a problematic waste stream can be turned into a valuable resource. End-of-life fishing nets are given a second life as high-performance industrial packaging. The project exemplifies a circular economy that combines environmental responsibility with industrial performance.
